Item Description

Here is a game based on a movie based on a game, and it turned out to be the best-looking Ratchet & Clank in years. Insomniac Games' 2016 reimagining of the 2002 original was developed alongside the animated film, retelling how Ratchet, a Lombax mechanic stuck on the planet Veldin, meets the defective warbot Clank and joins the Galactic Rangers to stop Chairman Drek's plan to tear planets apart. Captain Qwark narrates the whole adventure from a prison cell, giving the story a cheeky, unreliable spin.

It plays like classic Insomniac distilled. Ratchet hops between planets, grinding rails, swinging on a grapple and blasting away with one of the series' most outrageous arsenals: the Groovitron that forces enemies to dance, the Pixelizer that turns them into 8-bit pixels, the Sheepinator, the Proton Drum and the trusty Mr. Zurkon. Weapons level up with use and can be upgraded with Raritanium, while collectible Holocards unlock bonuses and new gear. Bolts collected during play buy new equipment, so every crate you smash feeds the next upgrade.

The pace stays varied from start to finish. Clank takes over for environmental puzzle sections, hoverboard races offer a high-speed detour, and space combat sequences break up the planet-hopping. Familiar locations like Kerwan, Novalis and Aridia return looking like a Pixar film, with a level of animation and detail that still impresses on PlayStation 4 hardware. Gold bolts, hidden collectibles and a Challenge Mode for replaying with your upgraded weapons give completionists plenty to chase.

This is the PlayStation Hits release of a game that served as the bridge between the PS2 classics and Rift Apart on PS5. It is the friendliest possible entry point into the franchise, and a joyful, colorful platformer-shooter for anyone who grew up with Ratchet or wants to see why Insomniac's Lombax has lasted more than two decades.

Ratchet & Clank is a single-player third-person shooter with platforming elements, and a reimagining of the series' first game. Players mainly control Ratchet, traveling from planet to planet to battle enemies with a wide range of inventive weapons and gadgets while crossing gaps with a grappling hook, riding grind rails, and solving occasional puzzles. Segments controlling the robot Clank focus on environmental puzzle solving, and the game also includes hoverboard races and spaceship combat. Weapons and gadgets are unlocked through progress or bought using bolts collected during play.
