Item Description

The opening minutes of Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction drop you into Metropolis on Kerwan as an invading army tears through the city, and it was a statement of intent in 2007. Insomniac Games' first PlayStation 3 adventure looked like a playable animated film, with crowded skylines, layered alien worlds and creatures that moved with a fluidity the PS2 games could only hint at.

The story finally turns toward Ratchet's own past. He is hunted by Emperor Percival Tachyon, the last of the Cragmites, who has a long and personal grudge against the lombax race, and the chase across the Polaris Galaxy brings in new allies in the adventurer Talwyn Apogee and the bickering old warbots Cronk and Zephyr. Clank, meanwhile, starts seeing the mysterious Zoni, tiny beings nobody else can perceive, and their interest in him sets up the threads the rest of the Future saga picks up.

The arsenal is classic Ratchet & Clank invention. The Groovitron drops a disco ball that forces enemies to dance, the Transmorpher turns them into harmless penguins, and the Fusion Grenade and Combuster handle more conventional business. Weapons level up with use and take Raritanium upgrades for extra customization. The game also leaned into the Sixaxis controller for skydiving sequences and the Tornado Launcher, motion-controlled novelties that capture the hardware's launch-era experimentation. Space pirate sections with Captain Slag and Rusty Pete add a swashbuckling streak to the comedy.

Tools of Destruction is the beginning of the Future saga, and it ends on a cliffhanger that leads straight into Quest for Booty and A Crack in Time. Playing it now is a reminder of how much a great developer could squeeze out of the early PlayStation 3, and it is the natural first stop for anyone who wants the full PS3 story of the lombax and his robot partner in order.
