Item Description

This is the game that made the PlayStation 3 feel like the future for Ratchet & Clank. Tools of Destruction was the duo's first adventure on the console, and in 2007 it looked like a playable animated film: dense, colorful cities, crowds of enemies on screen at once and explosions that lit up the whole room. It also opened Insomniac's Future saga, the story arc that finally starts digging into who Ratchet is and where he came from.

Emperor Percival Tachyon, the last of the Cragmites, is hunting Ratchet because Ratchet is believed to be the last Lombax in the universe, and the history between their two species becomes the spine of the plot. The chase sweeps the pair across a new galaxy, where they team up with the resistance fighter Talwyn Apogee and her bickering robot guardians, Cronk and Zephyr, tangle with a crew of space pirates and fight through wave after wave of Tachyon's troops. Clank, meanwhile, keeps receiving visits from the mysterious Zoni, whose purpose ties directly into the cliffhanger ending.

The arsenal is what keeps you hooked. The Groovitron throws a glittering disco ball into the air and forces every enemy nearby to stop and dance, while Mr. Zurkon is a pint-sized floating robot who blasts enemies and trash-talks them in the third person. Raritanium lets you upgrade each weapon along its own grid of improvements, so the guns you love get noticeably nastier over time. Some sequences put the Sixaxis motion controls to work, and the game was among the first on PS3 to support DualShock 3 rumble right off the disc.

Critics greeted it warmly, praising how fun and polished it felt, and it set the shape of the series for the whole PS3 generation. The story carries on through Quest for Booty and A Crack in Time, which makes Tools of Destruction the starting line for a run many fans rank as the duo's finest stretch, and a vivid snapshot of how hard Insomniac pushed early PlayStation 3 hardware. If the PS2 trilogy is where you fell for this pair, this is where their story gets personal.
