Item Description

A ray gun that turns enemies into chickens. A glove that tosses out snapping little robot minions. A launcher that transforms foes into sheep. Insomniac Games built its PlayStation 2 trilogy around an arsenal that was as funny as it was destructive, and the Ratchet & Clank Collection gathers all three of those adventures, Ratchet & Clank, Going Commando and Up Your Arsenal, into a single PlayStation 3 release, remastered in high definition with Trophies and stereoscopic 3D support added.

The first game sets up the partnership. Ratchet is a young mechanic stuck on the backwater planet Veldin, Clank is a small robot who fled Chairman Drek's factory, and their alliance starts out grudging before it turns into something warmer. Drek's scheme to build a new world out of pieces stolen from other planets gives the adventure its satirical edge, and it introduces Captain Qwark, the cowardly celebrity hero who became the series' best running joke.

Going Commando is where the formula clicked into place. Weapons now level up the more you use them, Ratchet's health grows as he fights, and a trip to a new galaxy on behalf of the corporate eccentric Abercrombie Fizzwidget adds gladiator arena challenges, hoverbike races and that sheep-making Sheepinator. Up Your Arsenal goes bigger still, pitting the duo against the robot-supremacist Dr. Nefarious with Qwark's ragtag Q-Force in tow, large-scale battlefield missions alongside the Galactic Rangers, side-scrolling Qwark vid-comics and Clank's own spy show, Secret Agent Clank.

Playing the three back to back is the real treat, because you can watch Insomniac sharpen its ideas from one year to the next, from the first game's fixed weapons to the upgrade-mad arsenals of the sequels. The humor lands for kids and adults alike without talking down to either, and the platforming, exploration and gunplay hold together remarkably well. On a PlayStation 3 shelf it is the tidiest way to own the run that made Ratchet and Clank PlayStation stars, and the natural lead-in to Tools of Destruction, which picked up their story on the same console.
