Item Description
Some games ask you to save the city. Rampage hands you the city as a buffet. Bally Midway's 1986 arcade hit, brought to the NES by Data East, turns you into a giant monster whose only job is to climb skyscrapers, punch them into rubble and snack on whatever the windows reveal, and it remains one of the purest pieces of destructive fun on the console.
On the NES the cast is George, the towering ape, and Lizzie, the enormous lizard. Ralph the wolf, the arcade's third monster, did not make the trip, but the two that remain are plenty. You scale the sides of buildings, punch through floor after floor and grab what pops out of the broken windows; food keeps your health up, but not everything behind the glass is good for you. The military does not take this lying down, sending soldiers, tanks and helicopters to bring you down. Lose all your energy and your monster shrinks back into an embarrassed, very small human who shuffles off the screen, one of the funniest fail states of the arcade era.
Rampage is at its best with two players working through the city together, coordinating to drop a building faster or, just as often, getting into a slap fight halfway up a tower. It is the kind of couch game that turns into laughing and trash talk within minutes, with no learning curve beyond climbing and punching.
The idea was so strong that the series kept returning with World Tour, Total Destruction and a 2018 film starring Dwayne Johnson. The NES cartridge is where many players first met George and Lizzie at home, and it is an easy, cheerful pick for anyone who wants pure arcade chaos on original hardware.
