Item Description

Every Operator you take into a containment zone is a bet, and Rainbow Six Extraction never lets you forget it. Ubisoft Montreal's 2022 co-op shooter lifts the gadgets, breaching and careful pacing of Siege out of the attack-and-defend arena and points a squad of up to three players at the Archaeans, an alien parasite that has overrun quarantined regions of the United States. It grew out of Siege's Outbreak event and was first announced as Rainbow Six Quarantine, and it plays like a tactical shooter that has been handed a horror premise and told to keep its nerve.

Each incursion is split into three sub-zones, each with its own randomized objective, from tracking alien nests to rescuing a trapped VIP. The Archaeans react to noise, so a quiet takedown is often worth more than a loud firefight, and the Sprawl, a dark growth that coats floors and walls, slows your movement and can turn a tidy plan into a scramble. Between sub-zones sits an airlock and a hard choice: push deeper for more experience, or extract with what you have. Damage carries over from one sub-zone to the next, so greed has a price.

That price is the game's best idea. An Operator who goes down is left behind as missing in action, and getting them back means returning to that region on a later run and pulling them free before the parasite claims them. It gives every decision weight and turns the roster into people you worry about rather than a menu of loadouts. Eighteen Siege Operators make the jump, among them Doc, Lion, Smoke, Thermite, Hibana and Vigil, with familiar tools reworked for fighting aliens instead of other players, and the four regions, New York, San Francisco, Alaska and Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, grow tougher as you unlock them.

The appeal is the tension a good squad creates: hushed calls at a doorway, a frantic retreat to the extraction point, the relief of hauling a lost teammate out of the growth. Siege players get to see their favorite Operators in a completely different kind of fight, and co-op fans get a smart, demanding alternative to the usual horde shooter, one built around planning and restraint rather than holding down the trigger.
