Item Description

Stack the team on the door, call the go code, and a well-planned breach is over before the flashbang haze clears. That moment is what Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3 is built around, and the GameCube version brings the squad-based counter-terrorism series to Nintendo's console in a form that rewards patience far more than reflexes. You play Domingo "Ding" Chavez at the head of a four-operative Rainbow team, and because a single bullet can end a mission, scouting a corner, picking an entry point and keeping your squad alive matter more than how quickly you can aim.

The command system is the clever part. A press of a button sends your teammates to a position, holds them in place, or has them open, flash and clear a room, while go-codes let you split the team across two entrances and trigger both breaches at once on your signal. Pulling that off, with your squad pouring in from one side while you take the other, is enormously satisfying. Ubisoft Shanghai mapped the full order set onto the GameCube controller, and once the layout becomes second nature the campaign plays out as a string of tense tactical puzzles. Sound matters as much as sight, because footsteps on the other side of a wall are often the only warning you get.

The console campaign tells its own story, separate from the PC's Raven Shield even where the two share locations. A wave of attacks on U.S. interests in South America seems to point one way, but the conspiracy behind them reaches into Venezuelan politics and the world oil market, and unraveling it sends Rainbow around the globe. It is pure Clancy: conspiratorial, international and steadily raising the stakes from one operation to the next.

The GameCube release has no online component, and it makes up for that with split-screen co-op. Coordinating breaches with a friend on the couch is a very different experience from directing AI teammates, and it gives this version a personality of its own. The GameCube's shelf of serious military shooters is a short one, and this disc brings Rainbow Six's methodical, plan-first style to Nintendo hardware.

About the game

The console version of Rainbow Six 3 features similar mission locations and layouts to the PC version, but an entirely different plot. Rainbow responds to a series of terrorist attacks against U.S. interests in South America, apparently being conducted by Islamic terrorists sponsored by Saudi Arabia. However, the true mastermind behind the attacks is actually the newly elected President of Venezuela, Juan Crespo. Crespo managed to get elected by advocating a strong anti-terror platform and exploiting the fear caused by the terrorist attacks (which he himself orchestrated). Crespo's plan is to discredit Saudi Arabia, then cut off the Venezuelan supply of oil to the United States, creating an oil crisis and driving up the price of oil, which he would then sell to the US on the black market at highly inflated prices.
