Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original. Original inserts or paperwork shown in the photos are included; display stands and other photography props are not. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Everything in Rainbow Islands comes back to the rainbow. Fire one and it becomes a weapon that sweeps enemies off their feet, a bridge you can walk across, a ladder up to the next ledge and a scoop that collects the treats and gems scattered around the stage. Jump on top of it and it shatters, crashing down on anything below. Few platformers have built so much play out of a single idea, and Taito's sequel to Bubble Bobble is still a joy to figure out.

The story picks up after Bubble Bobble, with Bub and Bob restored to human form as Bubby and Bobby, and the action turns from single-screen bubble trapping into a vertical climb. Each island is a stack of rounds you scale upward toward a goal at the top, with power-ups that speed up your movement, speed up your rainbows and let you fire more of them at once. The pressure builds as the chain of islands goes on, and the challenge shifts from survival to routing: where to lay a rainbow, when to break it and how to keep climbing without wasting a second.

The Nintendo version is its own creature rather than a straight arcade copy. Taito gave the North American and Japanese cartridges different level layouts and tweaked game mechanics, and swapped the arcade's Magical Island for a stage based on KiKi KaiKai, Taito's shrine-maiden shooter that later grew into Pocky & Rocky. Even players who know the arcade machine inside out will find surprises here.

For Bubble Bobble fans, Rainbow Islands is the essential next chapter, and the NES cartridge offers a version of it that plays differently from the arcade machine. It is bright, clever and endlessly replayable, a charming arcade adaptation with a personality all its own.
