Pokémon TCG single: Raichu - #14/102 - Base Set (LP). Our grade: Lightly Played. Pictured: this printing of the card. Every card ships triple-sleeved — a soft sleeve, a deck sleeve and a rigid top loader.

Item Description

Pikachu got the spotlight, but Raichu was the payoff. In the original Base Set, Pikachu's evolution is a holo rare Stage 1 Lightning Pokémon with 80 HP and two attacks that capture the coin-flip drama of the earliest Pokémon TCG. Agility, for one Lightning and two Colorless Energy, does 20 damage, and on heads it prevents all effects of attacks, including damage, done to Raichu during your opponent's next turn. Thunder, for three Lightning and one Colorless, slams for 60, though on tails Raichu does 30 damage to itself.

That risk-and-reward pairing is pure early Pokémon: a dodge that could swing a whole game and a big hit that could backfire. The artwork is by Ken Sugimori, the designer whose illustrations defined the look of the original Pokémon games, and its Pokédex entry notes that Raichu's long tail acts as a ground against its own high-voltage power.

This is the Base Set printing of Raichu, collector number 14/102, a holofoil from the set that launched the Pokémon Trading Card Game in English. As one of Base Set's sixteen holo rares, it belongs on any page devoted to the original set or to Pikachu's evolution line, right where it sat in so many childhood binders.
