Knock a lumbering giant into the air, leap up after it, keep the combo going in midair and send it crashing across the arena: that is the rhythm of Ragnarok Odyssey, and it is what separates it from the slower, heavier hunting games it gets compared to. Developed by Game Arts, the studio behind Grandia and Lunar, and brought to North America by XSEED Games in 2012, it is a Norse-flavored action RPG set in the Ragnarok universe, where humans and giants are locked in war after the fall of the gods.
You create a mercenary from more than twenty thousand appearance combinations, pick up missions from the guild hall, head out into hostile territory and come back with materials for crafting and upgrades. Six job classes cover very different playstyles: the Sword Warrior and Hammersmith hit hard up close, the Assassin is all speed, the Hunter fights from range, the Mage casts heavy magic and the Cleric supports. You are free to switch between them, so experimenting is part of the fun.
The most interesting system is the card setup, which replaces traditional leveling. Instead of grinding experience, you equip cards to your clothing and armor for stat boosts and class-specific abilities, and better gear can hold more cards or more powerful ones. Cards drop from defeated enemies or come from shops, which gives every hunt a loot-roll thrill and lets you tune a build to the giant you are about to face. The game was designed around four-player online co-op for its bigger fights, though the solo quest line carries the story.
Reviews were mixed, with some outlets loving the speed and controls and others finding the missions repetitive, but Ragnarok Odyssey sold well in Japan and earned an expanded follow-up, Ragnarok Odyssey Ace. On the Vita it fills a satisfying niche: a quick-hitting, mission-sized monster hunter that is built for short sessions, with flashy aerial combat that still feels great on the handheld's controls.
Ragnarok Odyssey is set in an original world based on Norse mythology where a battle is being waged between humans and giants after the fall of the gods had previously separated the races. Players create their characters from over 20,000 possible combinations based on customizable physical features, then select one of six specialized job classes. The game's real-time battles are fast and furious as players can fling enemies skyward, follow them into the air for gravity-defying strikes, then finish off the combo by smacking them clear across the stage. Gameplay is driven forward by story-advancing and optional quests, and up to four players can fight together in online co-op mode.
