Item Description

The first boss in R-Type is a towering alien creature built into the wall of its lair, with a lashing segmented tail, and the moment Dobkeratops fills the screen you know this is not a cheerful space shooter. Irem's 1987 arcade game sent a lone R-9 fighter against the Bydo Empire, a biomechanical horror that feels closer to science-fiction body horror than to the bright skies of its rivals, and it set a new standard for horizontal shooters.

Its genius is the Force, an indestructible orb that can lock onto the front or back of your ship or be launched out on its own to chew through enemies and soak up bullets. Learning when to attach it, detach it and recall it is the heart of the game. Hold the fire button and you charge the Wave Cannon for a piercing beam, and color-coded crystals change the Force's lasers to suit each situation. Every stage is a carefully built obstacle course, none more memorable than the third, where you take on a single enormous battleship piece by piece as it scrolls past.

Hudson Soft handled the PC Engine conversion, and in Japan the game was split across two HuCards, sold as R-Type I and R-Type II. North America got the whole adventure, all eight stages, on a single HuCard for the TurboGrafx-16. The port keeps the arcade's large, detailed sprites and methodical pace, and it has long been counted among the finest home conversions of the era, a showpiece for what NEC's little card format could do.

R-Type's ideas echo through decades of shooters, from its own sequels to the countless games that borrowed its pod-and-charge-shot formula. This TurboGrafx-16 version is the way many American players first met it, and it still plays like a puzzle with a trigger: punishing at first, then deeply satisfying once you learn where the Force belongs on every screen.
