Magic: The Gathering single: Queen Marchesa. Our grade: Near Mint. Pictured: this printing of the card. Every card ships triple-sleeved — a soft sleeve, a deck sleeve and a rigid top loader.
Some commanders ask for the throne; Queen Marchesa sends assassins to take it. The moment she enters, you become the monarch, which means drawing an extra card at the end of each of your turns for as long as you hold the title. She is a 3/3 with deathtouch and haste for four Mardu mana, so she can attack right away and turns any block into a losing trade.
The monarch is a hot potato, though: deal combat damage to the monarch and the crown is yours. Marchesa's answer is ruthless. At the beginning of your upkeep, if an opponent is the monarch, you create a 1/1 black Assassin with deathtouch and haste to go take it back. That steady supply of assassins turns every multiplayer game into a fight over the throne, and it makes her a favorite choice to lead a Mardu Commander deck built on politics and pressure. She and the monarch mechanic debuted together in Conspiracy: Take the Crown.
This is the Secret Lair Drop printing, collector number 499, a borderless foil illustrated by Peter Diamond for Rule the Room, a monarch-themed Secret Lair drop. The borderless frame lets the art run edge to edge, a fitting look for a card that wants to dominate the table.
