Item Description

Picture Gears of War reimagined through gothic anime design and set inside a colossal tower that is alive, and you have Quantum Theory, Tecmo's 2010 attempt at a Western-style cover shooter. Built by Team Tachyon on Unreal Engine 3, it follows Syd, a hulking Gilskin warrior, on a mission to climb and destroy a Living Tower that is spreading the Erosion, a black, poisonous growth, across a ruined world where the last survivors cling to a settlement called Cocoon.

Its big idea is cover that refuses to sit still. Walls rise from the floor, platforms shift and the architecture rearranges itself mid-firefight, so the spot you were crouched behind a moment ago may simply vanish. Syd can fire from the hip, aim down the sights or blindfire, headshots trigger a slow-motion close-up as enemies burst apart, and bosses hide weak points you have to find and target.

The partner is the odd, memorable twist. Filena, a Nosferatu, joins Syd even though she wants to save the tower he is sworn to bring down, and in combat he can literally throw her at enemies as a projectile, with her follow-up attacks extending his melee strikes. Their uneasy alliance against the Diablosis creatures, and what Filena learns about her own origins along the way, carries the story up to the tower's summit.

Critics were harsh, and the game earned a reputation as one of the era's most notorious Gears imitators. For a certain kind of collector, that is exactly the appeal. Quantum Theory is a fascinating artifact of the late-2000s moment when Japanese studios chased the Western shooter boom: earnest, strange and far more peculiar in its look than the games it set out to copy.
