Few open-world games hand you this much power this quickly. Not long after Alex Mercer wakes up on a slab in a Manhattan morgue, he is sprinting straight up the sides of skyscrapers, gliding between rooftops and hurling cars at military helicopters, and Prototype never asks him to slow down. Radical Entertainment, the studio behind The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, took everything it had learned about making a player feel monstrously strong and turned it loose on a city in the grip of a viral outbreak.
Alex is infected with the Blacklight virus, and his body has become the weapon. Claws, hammer fists, a whip-like arm that lashes across a street, a massive blade, armor and a shield can all be shaped on the fly, and each upgrade opens up more destructive ways to combine them. The most memorable trick is consumption: Alex can absorb a person, take on their appearance and walk right past Blackwatch, the military force locking the island down. Disguised as a soldier, he can stroll into a base, then hijack a tank or a helicopter and turn the army's own hardware against it.
The story comes together through the Web of Intrigue, a network of memories Alex collects by hunting down and consuming specific targets scattered across Manhattan. Every one adds a fragment to a conspiracy involving the Gentek corporation, Blackwatch and Elizabeth Greene, the woman at the heart of the outbreak, and piecing it together gives the carnage a darker, more paranoid edge. Meanwhile the infection spreads block by block, with hive zones and hulking Hunters claiming more of the city as the days count down.
Prototype landed in 2009 just weeks after inFamous, and the two superpowered sandbox games were compared endlessly. Where inFamous asked you to choose between hero and villain, Prototype leaned unapologetically into its antihero's brutality, and that unrestrained excess is exactly why people still bring it up. It kicked off a short-lived series that continued with Prototype 2 in 2012, but this is the original outbreak: chaotic, gory and gleefully over the top, the purest version of the shapeshifting power fantasy Radical set out to build.
Prototype is the first of two games, and lets the user take control of Alex Mercer as he fights to stop the viral outbreak known as BLACKLIGHT throughout Manhattan. Alex is himself infected by the virus, which has given him special, mutant, abilities that will evolve with time and aid him in stopping the virus.
