Item Description

Shin Sakura Taisen, known in the West as Project Sakura Wars, brought one of Sega's most distinctive franchises back after more than a decade away. The premise is wonderfully specific: in an alternate, steam-powered 1940 Tokyo, the Imperial Combat Revue's Flower Division are stage performers in peacetime and mech pilots in wartime, defending the city from demons when they are not putting on shows at the theater. When newly appointed captain Seijuro Kamiyama arrives, the troupe is struggling on both fronts and at risk of being shut down.

The game splits its time between two halves that feed each other. In adventure segments you explore the theater and the streets of Tokyo, building relationships with Sakura Amamiya, Hatsuho Shinonome, Azami Mochizuki, Anastasia Palma and Claris through the series' LIPS conversation system, where timed dialogue choices shape how each heroine sees you. Then the action takes over: for this reboot, Sega replaced the series' traditional grid-based tactics with fast 3D combat, piloting spirit-powered armor against demons and rival teams in the Combat Revue World Tournament.

The presentation is lavish. Character designs come from Tite Kubo, creator of Bleach, and the music is again by longtime series composer Kohei Tanaka, whose stirring theater-style songs are part of the franchise's identity. Fully animated cutscenes, a vocal-heavy soundtrack and an earnest, upbeat tone make it feel like stepping into an anime series with you in the captain's chair. Developed by Sega's CS2 R&D division, it is a warm-hearted mix of visual novel, dating sim and action game that nothing else quite matches.

This is the original Japanese release, which went on sale in December 2019, months ahead of the Western version, and it is presented for Japanese-language play. For import collectors and long-time fans who followed Sakura Taisen from its Sega Saturn origins, the Japanese edition, with its original packaging and branding, is the natural way to own the series' modern return.
