Item Description

A girl sealed in ice since ancient times, a civilization that vanished leaving behind technology no one can explain, and a professor who never refuses a riddle: Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy opens on its grandest mystery yet. Layton, his young apprentice Luke and his resourceful assistant Emmy are invited to the snowbound village of Froenborg by the archaeologist Desmond Sycamore, who claims to have found a living mummy. What they free from the ice is Aurora, a girl with no memory of her past, and her discovery sets off a race against the shadowy organization Targent to unlock the secrets of the Azran.

The heart of it, as always, is the puzzles. Level-5 fills every street and landscape with brainteasers, from sliding blocks and logic problems to trick questions and spatial riddles, many of them themed to the place you are exploring. You tap the touch screen to investigate the scenery, uncover hint coins tucked into the backgrounds and scribble notes on the memo pad as you work toward an answer. The trunk collects bonus minigames as you go, including Nutty Roller, Dress Up and Bloom Burst, each a small puzzle game in its own right.

This entry also thinks bigger than any Layton before it. Aboard Sycamore's airship, the Bostonius, the team travels the globe in search of five Azran eggs scattered around the world, each destination with its own residents, mysteries and puzzles. Fully animated cutscenes give the story the feel of a feature film, the voice cast captures Layton's unflappable courtesy and Luke's earnestness, and Tomohito Nishiura, who has scored every game in the series, brings back the warm, wistful sound fans know. The masked Jean Descole and Targent's leader Leon Bronev keep the pressure on, and the finale reveals secrets about the professor himself.

Azran Legacy is the third and final chapter of the prequel trilogy that began with Last Specter and Miracle Mask, and its closing scenes lead into Curious Village, binding both Layton trilogies into one long story. Critics rated it among the strongest entries in the series, and it is the natural place to finish the saga before going back to Curious Village to see where it all began, with a whole new understanding of the gentleman behind the top hat.
