Item Description

The bell rings, the crowd roars, and a hulking opponent fills the screen, staring straight down the camera at you. Prize Fighter puts you inside the gloves of a young boxer known as The Kid and asks you to survive, round by round, against four live-action fighters. Digital Pictures shot the whole thing in black and white, and that choice gives it the grain and grit of an old fight film rather than the bright, campy look of most early-nineties FMV.

It plays from a first-person view, with the footage reacting to what you do. Throw jabs and power shots, block incoming punches, and watch your opponent stagger, cover up or come back swinging. Learning each fighter's tells is the heart of it, because timing matters far more than speed. The ladder climbs from Honeyboy Fernandez through Mega Joe Falco and Rex Hawkins to the title shot against Nuke "The Duke" Johnson, and the game spans two discs to hold it all.

Digital Pictures was the studio behind Night Trap and Sewer Shark, and its Sega CD catalogue is a time capsule of the moment when video on a disc looked like the future of games. Prize Fighter is often singled out as one of its strongest efforts, a production with real cinematic ambition that also gives you something tangible to master. Its reputation has endured: decades later it was revived as a remastered Heavyweight Edition by Limited Run Games.

As a 1993 Sega CD original published by Sega, it is the version that started it all, a two-disc slice of FMV history that still has the swagger of a boxing movie. Fans of the era's FMV boom will find few productions on the system with more style, and few that make getting knocked down feel this personal.
