The cartridge label is clean, the manual is intact with no missing pages, and the box shows light shelf wear but is structurally solid. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Somewhere in the Salad Kingdom, a cucumber in armor is about to save the day. When the wicked Minister Pumpkin kidnaps Princess Tomato and makes off with the royal emblem, her father, King Broccoli, dies of grief, and it falls to the kingdom's greatest knight, Sir Cucumber, to set things right. Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom plays that story with a perfectly straight face and fills it with puns, absurd produce characters and gentle comedy, and the result is unlike anything else in the NES library.

Hudson Soft first released the game in 1984 on Japanese home computers such as the PC-88 and MSX, where it was played by typing commands into a text parser. The 1988 Famicom version was a near ground-up overhaul that redrew the art, expanded the story and doubled the adventure from four chapters to eight, and that version was translated for the NES in 1991. It was the only one of Hudson's adventure games brought to English-speaking players, which makes it an unusual window into the Japanese adventure games of the 1980s.

Each scene appears in first-person view inside a window, with a description beneath it, and you play by choosing commands such as move, talk, give and fight from buttons arranged around the screen's edges. Early on, Sir Cucumber meets Percy, an injured baby persimmon who joins the quest as his squire, offers advice and gets his own command for solving puzzles. From there the journey takes in a prison break, a visit to the town of Sopville in enemy disguise, a squad of villainous bananas dealt with by peanut bomb, and a showdown in which you take command of a giant robot against a monstrous mechanical watermelon. Battles are settled with Finger Wars, a rock-paper-scissors duel, and three maze sequences add a light dungeon-crawling flavor.

Next to NES adventures like Shadowgate and Deja Vu, it is relaxed and forgiving: there is no way to die or get permanently stuck, and passwords mark your progress. That makes it an easy recommendation for younger players or anyone who wants a puzzle adventure that rewards curiosity rather than punishing it, and its offbeat humor earns it a special place among the console's oddities. Few games on any system have asked players to rescue a tomato, and fewer still have done it with this much charm.
