Item Description

Seven years after he unleashed the Sands of Time, the Prince has learned a hard lesson: you cannot cheat fate without something coming to collect. That something is the Dahaka, a hulking guardian of the timeline that hunts him without mercy, and it gives Warrior Within a sense of dread its fairy-tale predecessor never had. Desperate to survive, the Prince sails for the Island of Time, where the Empress of Time created the Sands, hoping to stop them from ever being made. The result is Ubisoft Montreal's darkest, angriest take on Prince of Persia, and one of the boldest course corrections any sequel of the 2000s attempted.

Combat is where the change hits hardest. The Free-Form Fighting System lets the Prince chain strikes in any direction, vault off walls and enemies, grab foes for throws and wield a second weapon in his off hand. Many of those secondary weapons can be stolen from enemies and hurled back at them, and finishing moves make every fight brutal and physical. The Sands powers return too, with rewind, slow-motion and a new wave of sand that knocks down every attacker around him. Duels against Shahdee and the Empress Kaileena show the system at its best.

The platforming is just as sharp. The fortress on the Island of Time exists in two eras, and time portals let the Prince move between the crumbling present and the lavish past, turning the whole castle into a puzzle box where opening a path in one era changes the other. Then there are the chases: when the Dahaka appears there is no fighting back, only running, wall-running and leaping for the water it cannot cross, and those escapes still get the pulse racing. The soundtrack trades the Persian-flavored mood of Sands for heavy guitars, including tracks from Godsmack.

Not every fan embraced the grim new attitude, but there is no denying how much game is here or how well it plays. Tracking down every hidden Life Upgrade unlocks the Water Sword and the true ending, the one that leads straight into The Two Thrones, which makes Warrior Within the pivotal middle chapter of the Sands of Time trilogy. It is the Prince at his most battle-hardened, and the chapter that turns a fairy tale into a saga.

Prince of Persia: Warrior Within is a video game and sequel to Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. It picks up where The Sands of Time left off, adding new features, specifically, options in combat. The Prince now has the ability to wield two weapons at a time as well as the ability to steal his enemies' weapons and throw them. The Prince's repertoire of combat moves has been expanded into varying strings that allow players to attack enemies with more complexity than was possible in the previous game. Warrior Within has a darker tone than its predecessor adding in the ability for the Prince to dispatch his enemies with various finishing moves. In addition to the rewind, slow-down, and speed-up powers from The Sands of Time, the Prince also has a new sand power: a circular "wave" of sand that knocks down all surrounding enemies as well as damaging them.
