Item Description

A sandstorm, a lost donkey named Farah, and a princess falling out of the sky. Ubisoft Montreal's 2008 Prince of Persia starts the series over with a new Prince, a wandering adventurer with a quick tongue, and a new world: a desert kingdom where Elika's father, the Mourning King, has freed the dark god Ahriman. The two of them have to heal the land one region at a time, and the bond between a cynical drifter and a princess carrying the weight of her kingdom becomes the heart of the game.

The look is unlike anything else in the series, a painterly, cel-shaded style that makes the corrupted lands feel like moving illustrations, and healing each fertile ground floods it with color. Movement is fluid and flowing: the Prince wall-runs, swings from rings and climbs with a clawed gauntlet, while Elika's magic, unlocked through power plates, launches the pair across chasms, through the air and along walls. When a jump goes wrong, Elika reaches out and pulls him back to safety, so there are no game-over screens, just momentum.

Combat is built around tense one-on-one duels, with Elika's magic, the Prince's sword and his gauntlet chained into combos. The bosses are Ahriman's four Corrupted, the Hunter, the Alchemist, the Concubine and the Warrior, each guarding a corner of the kingdom and returning again and again as you push deeper. Nolan North voices the Prince, and Inon Zur's score gives the world a sweeping, melancholy tone.

It never received a direct sequel, which makes it a fascinating standalone in the franchise, separate from the Sands of Time saga and full of ideas the series has not revisited. On a PS3 it is a beautiful, relaxed, story-driven platformer with an ending that players still argue about years later.
