Item Description

"Me hungry! Me want FOOD!!" That is the whole motivation for Sam the caveman, and it is a perfect setup for a platformer that never takes itself too seriously. Titus Interactive's Prehistorik series began on home computers in the early '90s, and Prehistorik Man was its leap onto consoles, a cartoonish adventure built on slapstick, big expressive animation and a club-swinging hero with an empty stomach.

The Game Boy version, released in 1996, is an adaptation of Prehistorik 2 reworked for the handheld rather than a straight copy, with levels and controls redesigned around the hardware. It is pared down to two buttons, jump and attack, which keeps the action immediate: bop the prehistoric locals with your club, hop across the landscape and keep moving toward the next meal. Ten levels make up the trip, and a boss fight waits after every second one, so the pacing builds in regular bursts rather than dragging.

There is a distinctly European flavor to it, the French studio's sense of humor coming through in Sam's mugging and the oddball enemies, which makes it stand out among the American and Japanese platformers that filled the Game Boy's shelves. It is a cheerful, overlooked handheld oddity, and a fun way to see how Titus squeezed the caveman of the Super Nintendo Prehistorik Man onto the Game Boy's little screen.

About the game

"Me hungry! Me want FOOD!!" You, Sam the caveman, are hungry. You travel through various levels, defeating enemies, to gain yourself enough to eat in this side-scrolling platform game. Unlike the other game, the levels and controls differ in this version, due to the limitations of the Game Boy. There are ten levels and after every second level, there is a boss fight. Also, there are only two buttons, jump and attack. Prehistorik Man for Game Boy is a port of Prehistorik 2 for MS DOS/Amstrad CPC.
