Item Description

Chell wakes in an Aperture Science relaxation vault after an unknown length of sleep, and the friendly voice at the door belongs to Wheatley, a babbling personality core who promises to get her out. Then he accidentally switches GLaDOS back on. That is the setup for Portal 2, Valve's 2011 follow-up to the 2007 original, which turned a brilliant short experiment into a full-length adventure through a facility that is crumbling, overgrown and very, very angry.

The core trick is unchanged: fire two linked portals and bend space and momentum to reach the exit. What Portal 2 adds is a toolkit that keeps the puzzles surprising for the whole campaign. Hard Light Bridges, Excursion Funnels, Aerial Faith Plates and Thermal Discouragement Beams all interact with portals, and the gels are a highlight. Blue Repulsion Gel turns surfaces into trampolines, orange Propulsion Gel turns them into racetracks, and white Conversion Gel lets you place portals on surfaces that would never take them. Cracking a chamber produces a jolt of cleverness few games can match.

The writing is the other half of the magic. Ellen McLain's GLaDOS is a masterpiece of passive-aggressive menace, Stephen Merchant makes Wheatley endlessly funny and quietly sad, and a descent into the buried ruins of old Aperture introduces J.K. Simmons as founder Cave Johnson, whose recorded announcements trace the company's slide from 1950s ambition into gloriously terrible decisions. The credits close on Jonathan Coulton's “Want You Gone,” a worthy successor to “Still Alive.”

Then there is the co-op campaign, a separate set of test chambers starring the robots Atlas and P-Body that has two players coordinating four portals at once, using pings and gestures to share their plans. On the Xbox 360 it can be played split-screen, which makes this a rare puzzle game built for the couch. Portal 2 swept awards in 2011 and is still the benchmark every first-person puzzle game gets measured against.

About the game

Sequel to the acclaimed Portal (2007), Portal 2 pits the protagonist of the original game, Chell, and her new robot friend, Wheatley, against more puzzles conceived by GLaDOS, an A.I. with the sole purpose of testing the Portal Gun's mechanics and taking revenge on Chell for the events of Portal. As a result of several interactions and revelations, Chell once again pushes to escape Aperture Science Labs.
