Item Description

The first voice you hear in Portal 2 belongs to Wheatley, a nervous little personality core voiced by Stephen Merchant, and within the hour his well-meaning bungling has woken GLaDOS from her slumber. Chell is back in a decayed, overgrown Aperture Science, GLaDOS (voiced again by Ellen McLain) has a score to settle, and Valve spins that setup into one of the funniest and most cleverly built games of its generation.

The puzzles grow out of the original's portal gun but go much further. Hard Light Bridges create walkways you can redirect through portals, Excursion Funnels carry you and your cubes through the air, Aerial Faith Plates fling you across chambers, and Thermal Discouragement Beams have to be bent around the room with redirection cubes. The gels are the standouts: blue Repulsion Gel turns floors into trampolines, orange Propulsion Gel sends you sprinting, and white Conversion Gel makes any surface portal-ready. Every chamber teaches you something, then expects you to combine it with everything else.

The story digs into Aperture's past, too. Deep underground, the recorded announcements of founder Cave Johnson, voiced by J.K. Simmons, chart the company's slide from ambition to madness, and the balance between GLaDOS, Wheatley and Cave is a masterclass in comic writing. The separate co-op campaign stars the robots Atlas and P-Body and is built entirely around two portal guns working together, and on PS3 it can be played split-screen on one couch. The credits close with Jonathan Coulton's "Want You Gone", a perfect send-off.

The PlayStation 3 version has a story of its own: Gabe Newell, once a famously vocal critic of the console, walked onto Sony's E3 2010 stage to announce it, and Valve built this release with its Steamworks features rather than handing it off. It is the PS3 home of a puzzle game that still sets the standard for the genre.

About the game

Sequel to the acclaimed Portal (2007), Portal 2 pits the protagonist of the original game, Chell, and her new robot friend, Wheatley, against more puzzles conceived by GLaDOS, an A.I. with the sole purpose of testing the Portal Gun's mechanics and taking revenge on Chell for the events of Portal. As a result of several interactions and revelations, Chell once again pushes to escape Aperture Science Labs.
