Item Description

Everything in Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World looks like it was picked up off a crafting table. Hills are quilted from felt, waterfalls are ribbons of fabric, clouds are puffs of cotton, and Yoshi himself is knitted from yarn, stretching and bunching as he runs. Developed by Good-Feel, the studio behind Kirby's Epic Yarn, it brings the 2015 Wii U platformer Yoshi's Woolly World to the Nintendo 3DS with all of the original stages plus a batch of new content made for the handheld release.

The play is classic Yoshi with a handmade twist. Yoshi flutter-jumps, ground-pounds and gobbles up enemies, but instead of eggs he turns them into balls of yarn, which he throws to knit outlined platforms into solid ground, wrap up foes or uncover hidden paths. Every stage hides something to find, from the Wonder Wool that restores the Yoshis Kamek has unraveled to flowers, stamp patches and beads tucked behind loose threads and fabric seams. Woolly transformations change the rules from time to time, and the level design rewards anyone willing to poke at every corner and loose stitch.

The 3DS release adds plenty of its own. Yarn Poochy, Yoshi's loyal dog, stars in new Poochy stages, a mad dash for beads where he dodges stumps, mushes down snowy paths and chases Lakitu. Mellow Mode makes the adventure gentler for younger or newer players, and here it comes with the curious Poochy Pups, who sniff out secrets along the way. You can design your own Yarn Yoshi and share it with friends via StreetPass, and 30 short stop-motion films starring Yarn Poochy and Yarn Yoshi make a wonderfully silly reward for exploring.

It is a relaxed, generous platformer, easy to see through to the end but deep enough for completionists chasing every Wonder Wool and stamp patch, and it is the version that lets you take Woolly World's handcrafted charm on the go. Collectibles unlock extra stages and new patterned Yoshis as you play, and the game also works with amiibo. On Nintendo's last dual-screen handheld, it carries on the gentle, exploratory spirit of Yoshi's Island in its coziest form yet.
