Item Description
Poliwrath's swirl-bellied, muscle-bound silhouette was one of the first-generation designs that stuck with kids from the very first booster, and Ken Sugimori's Base Set holo puts it front and center on the classic shimmering foil. The card's Pokédex entry leans into the joke that this bruiser is also a world-class swimmer, able to outpace the best human swimmers at both front crawl and breaststroke.
In play it is a 90 HP Stage 2 Water Pokémon that evolves from Poliwhirl, with two attacks that rewarded careful Energy management. Water Gun does 30 damage plus 10 more for each extra Water Energy attached beyond its cost, up to 20 extra, and Whirlpool hits for 40 while discarding an Energy card from the Defending Pokémon, a real disruption tool when the original format revolved around building up Energy.
For collectors finishing the original 16 Base Set holos, Poliwrath is a satisfying piece of that first wave of Pokémon cards. This is card 13/102 from the Base Set, illustrated by Ken Sugimori, in holofoil.
