Item Description

Pole Position was the highest-grossing arcade game in North America in 1983, the racer everyone lined up to play, and Atari's 2600 conversion brought Namco's Fuji Speedway home while the coin-op was still packing arcades. Namco chose the real Japanese circuit so players would recognize it, and the formula it built around that track, a qualifying run followed by a race against the clock and the field, became the template for arcade racing.

The 2600 version keeps that structure intact. You start with a qualifying lap against a 90-second clock and have to finish inside 73 seconds to make the Grand Prix, with a faster lap earning a better spot on the grid and a bigger bonus, all the way up to the pole itself. Then comes a four-lap race in which every lap completed before the timer runs out buys extra time. Push the joystick up for low gear and down for high, which tops out at 200 mph, brake with the button, and weave through the rival cars for points. Drift onto the red-and-white shoulder and you bleed speed fast, though it can also be the escape route that saves you from a crash.

Fitting it into an 8K cartridge meant losing the arcade's speech and simplifying the visuals, but the sense of speed survived, and critics loved it: Computer and Video Games called it the best driving game available on the VCS, and Entertainment Weekly later named it one of the ten best 2600 games. It is the racing cartridge that defined the system's arcade-conversion era, and paired with Night Driver it shows just how quickly home racing games grew up.
