Item Description
Every Pokémon generation has a Legendary on the cover, but few look as ominous as Yveltal. The Destruction Pokémon spreads its crimson wings over Pokémon Y like a dark omen, and it sits at the center of a story about an ancient war, a grieving giant of a man named AZ and an ultimate weapon that Team Flare wants to fire again. For a series known for sunny optimism, Y's Kalos adventure carries a surprisingly melancholy streak, and Yveltal is its emblem.
Around that story is the biggest leap the main series had made up to that point. Pokémon X and Y, released together on the Nintendo 3DS in 2013, rebuilt Pokémon in full 3D, and the France-inspired Kalos region makes the most of it, from the café-lined boulevards of Lumiose City and its Prism Tower to the gilded halls of Parfum Palace and the mysterious sundial of Anistar City. You can shop Lumiose's boutiques for a new hat or jacket, glide along routes on roller skates, and stop to feed and pet your team in Pokémon-Amie or sharpen their stats with Super Training on the touch screen.
Battling changed too. Mega Evolution debuted here, letting chosen Pokémon power up mid-fight, and Pokémon Y holds the Mega Stones for Mega Charizard Y, a sharp-winged Fire-and-Flying powerhouse whose arrival summons harsh sunlight, and the compact, purely Psychic Mega Mewtwo Y. The new Fairy type finally put Dragon-types in check, Horde Encounters send five wild Pokémon at you at once, and Y has its own exclusive Kalos species, including the perfume-scented Spritzee and the Poison-and-Water Skrelp.
X and Y set the template for the 3D era that every main-series game since has followed, and Kalos made such an impression that Pokémon Legends: Z-A returned to Lumiose City in 2025 and brought Mega Evolution back with it. Pokémon Y is the darker-edged half of that turning point: the version where Yveltal looms over the finale, Mega Charizard Y takes to the skies and Kalos first came to life.
