A black-and-violet Lugia with a cold, machine-like stare sets the tone for Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness long before you ever reach it. Genius Sonority's 2005 GameCube RPG returns to Orre, the dusty, gym-free region introduced in Pokémon Colosseum, five years after that game's events, and the criminal syndicate Cipher is back in business. Its crowning experiment is XD001, a Shadow Lugia built to be the ultimate Shadow Pokémon, and tracking it down pulls you from the harbor town of Gateon Port all the way to Cipher's stronghold on Citadark Isle.
You play as Michael, a young trainer whose Snag Machine lets him pull Shadow Pokémon away from Cipher's agents in the middle of battle. There are 83 of them to rescue, far more than Colosseum offered, and every one arrives with its heart artificially closed: it fights with Shadow moves and can slip into a self-damaging Reverse Mode. Opening that heart again is the soul of the game. You battle alongside it, keep it in your party, and in XD's new Purify Chamber you arrange your other Pokémon around it to speed the process, until the purified partner is finally free to grow and learn its natural moves.
XD also loosens Colosseum's structure in ways fans noticed right away. Single battles return alongside the double battles that defined its predecessor, Michael starts his journey with an Eevee, and three Poké Spots out in the desert let you lure wild Pokémon with Poké Snacks. Battle CDs present tricky set-piece scenarios to solve, and a separate battle mode supports head-to-head matches with friends. The game was built to talk to the Game Boy Advance as well: with a GameCube-GBA link cable, Pokémon can travel between XD and Ruby, Sapphire, FireRed, LeafGreen and Emerald, so a rescued Shadow Pokémon can go on to join a Hoenn or Kanto team.
Reviewers at the time saw XD as a confident refinement rather than a reinvention, but its premise has aged into something special. No later Pokémon RPG returned to Orre, so Colosseum and XD stand together as a two-game console saga with a darker edge, a desert full of rogue trainers and a mission built around healing Pokémon rather than simply collecting them. Playing it on a GameCube is still the way to meet Shadow Lugia face to face, and it pairs naturally with a Generation III cartridge for anyone who wants their rescued partners to carry the story forward.
Pokemon XD is a sequel to the role-playing game Pokémon Colosseum. You'll play as Michael, a Pokémon trainer who is trying to thwart the evil Cipher. Cipher plans to control the world by using the powerful, but unpredictable, shadow Pokémon. Now you must fight back by collecting your own shadow Pokémon and beating Cipher's goons in battle. Pokémon XD also lets you import Pokémon from Game Boy Advance Pokémon games and participate in head-to-head battles with other players.
