Paldea was the series' first fully open world, and Pokémon Violet hands you the whole thing almost from the first day of class. As a new student at Uva Academy you set out on a self-directed treasure hunt with Miraidon, the futuristic legendary that carries you across land, water and air, and you braid together three storylines in whatever order you like: the eight Gyms of Victory Road, the hunt for giant Titan Pokémon on the Path of Legends, and the showdown with Team Star on Starfall Street. Your first partner is Sprigatito, Fuecoco or Quaxly, and Terastallization lets any Pokémon change its type mid-battle in a flash of crystal.
Violet leans into the future. Its version-exclusive Paradox Pokémon are robotic takes on familiar species, its academy is Uva rather than Scarlet's Naranja, and every thread of the story points toward the enormous crater at the center of the map, Area Zero, where the biggest answers wait. Wandering off the path is half the joy: a distant mountain, an unfamiliar silhouette on a ridge or a glint in a cave is always worth a detour.
Violet + The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero was the release that paired the game with its two-part expansion, which takes the story well beyond Paldea. In The Teal Mask, a school trip heads to Kitakami, a rural mountain land steeped in festivals and folklore about Ogerpon, a masked Pokémon whose story is not quite what the locals believe, and introduces siblings Carmine and Kieran of Blueberry Academy. The Indigo Disk then moves to Blueberry itself, a school in Unova built partly beneath the sea, where the Terarium's recreated habitats are home to Pokémon from across the series and the BB League's double battles, Elite Four and Champion Kieran give the endgame real teeth. The last answers wait deep in Area Zero with Terapagos, the legendary tied to the Terastal phenomenon itself.
Together, the game and its expansion form the fullest telling of the ninth generation's story, with rivals who grow and change across both chapters and a finale that finally explains the crater at the heart of the map. Even on its own, Violet is a big, freewheeling adventure, and with Miraidon under you it is a generation built for chasing whatever is over the next hill.
