Pokémon Sword arrived on the Nintendo Switch in November 2019 and brought the mainline Pokémon RPG experience into the HD era in a big way. Developed by Game Freak and set in the Galar region, a land inspired by the United Kingdom, it sends you from town to town to challenge Gym Leaders and ultimately compete in the Pokémon League's championship tournament. The world feels alive in a way the series hadn't quite achieved before, with wild Pokémon roaming the overworld, chasing or fleeing from you, and the vast Wild Area opening up fully explorable terrain with a free camera, where the weather changes daily and shapes which Pokémon appear.
The headline mechanic is Dynamax and Gigantamax: the ability to transform a Pokémon into a towering giant for three turns, with supercharged Max Moves that can swing the tide of a tough Gym match or a Max Raid Battle, while select Pokémon Gigantamax into new forms with their own G-Max Moves. Max Raid Battles were built for teams of four, whether friends over local wireless or online or computer-controlled partners, giving the game a cooperative dimension that kept communities engaged well past the main story. Sword-exclusive Pokémon and Gym Leaders, Bea with her Fighting types and Gordie with his Rock types, give this version its own identity, even if you end up trading with a Shield-owning friend to fill out the Pokédex.
The Galar Pokédex introduced a memorable new generation of starters, the energetic Scorbunny, the mischievous Grookey and the timid Sobble, alongside new favorites like Dragapult and Corviknight and the legendary wolf Zacian, who graces this version's cover. The art direction is warm and charming throughout, with Gyms styled like football stadiums that make each battle feel genuinely theatrical. Sword and Shield have sold more than 26 million units combined, and Galar remains one of the Switch's best-loved Pokémon adventures.
A turn-based role-playing game set in the Galar region, a fictional land inspired by the United Kingdom. Players catch, train, and battle creatures called Pokémon while traveling across the region to collect eight Gym badges and ultimately challenge the reigning Champion. The game introduces the Dynamax and Gigantamax mechanics, which temporarily transform Pokémon into giant forms with enhanced attacks. A fully explorable open-world Wild Area connects major locations, with weather-dependent Pokémon encounters and cooperative raid battles for up to four players. The first mainline Pokémon entry on the Nintendo Switch, it notably adopted DLC expansions instead of the series' traditional enhanced re-releases.
