Item Description

There are few games in the Nintendo 64 library as charming and singular as Pokémon Snap. Released at the height of the original Pokémon craze, it took a wildly different approach from the mainline series: instead of catching Pokémon, you photograph them. As young photographer Todd Snap, riding the slow-rolling ZERO-ONE through the wilds of Pokémon Island on Professor Oak's behalf, you document wild Pokémon in their natural habitats. It sounds simple, but the game reveals surprising depth the more time you spend with it.

The genius of Pokémon Snap lies in how it rewards observation and creativity. Tossing food, playing the Poké Flute or lobbing a Pester Ball can coax Pokémon into spectacular behavior: Charizard soaring overhead, Snorlax roused from a deep slumber, Mew spinning inside its glowing bubble. Professor Oak grades every shot on size, pose and technique, with bonus points for fitting more of the same species into the frame, and that pushes you to ride every course again hunting for the perfect image. The chase for high scores and hidden encounters gives a game with no combat at all a remarkable amount of replay value.

Each of the seven courses has its own personality and its own roster of Pokémon to discover, from a tropical beach and a winding river to a dark cave, a volcanic crater and the mysterious Rainbow Cloud. Some of the 63 Pokémon are easy to spot; others only appear after you chain together a specific sequence of actions. Finding Mew or coaxing out a rare encounter for the first time feels like a real discovery, the kind of moment that stuck with kids and adults alike.

Pokémon Snap holds a special corner of Nintendo 64 history. In the U.S., Blockbuster stores even hosted Pokémon Snap Station kiosks that printed players' best shots as stickers, and fans kept asking for a sequel for more than two decades until New Pokémon Snap finally arrived on Switch in 2021. The original is still the purest form of the idea: a slow, curious safari through a world that rewards you for stopping to look.
