Pokémon Sapphire is one of the best-loved entries in the Pokémon series, taking players into the lush, water-soaked Hoenn region for what became a generation-defining adventure on the Game Boy Advance. Developed by Game Freak and released in Japan in 2002 and in North America in March 2003, it opened a region unlike anything fans had explored before, a map dominated by ocean routes, hidden islands and volcanic peaks. Sapphire's story centers on Team Aqua and its plan to awaken the legendary Kyogre, flooding Hoenn's landmasses to expand the seas. That design gives the game a distinct identity that still resonates with the players who grew up with it, and its version-exclusive legendary and encounters make it worth owning on its own merits.

Generation III was a landmark moment for the series. The move to GBA hardware brought 135 new Pokémon, double battles, Abilities and Natures, a revamped battle system that laid the groundwork for competitive Pokémon as it is played today. Weather feels especially at home in Sapphire, with rain teams built around Kyogre and its Drizzle ability, and the drama of Kyogre's appearance in the Cave of Origin beneath Sootopolis City is still a moment fans talk about. The Pokédex is stacked, the post-game has real substance, and Pokémon Contests and customizable Secret Bases add a charming layer of personality that sets this era apart.

Then there's the sound of it. The Hoenn soundtrack by Junichi Masuda, Go Ichinose and Morikazu Aoki is unforgettable: Route 110, Littleroot Town and the Gym Leader battle theme are music that comes back the moment a few notes play. Together with Ruby, it became the best-selling game on the Game Boy Advance, and Hoenn remains one of the series' most distinctive regions.
