Item Description
Picture a toy box where every Pokémon is a clockwork figure, and every figure is itching for a brawl. That is the world of Pokémon Rumble Blast, the first Pokémon game made exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS and the follow-up to the WiiWare original, Pokémon Rumble. The Glowdrops that flow from the land's fountains have been stolen, and it falls to a scrappy little Toy Pokémon, along with every new friend it makes on the road, to get them back.
The action is pure real-time chaos. You move with the Circle Pad and hammer out attacks, carrying up to two moves at a time, while dozens of enemy toys pile into the arena at once. Knocked-out opponents sometimes leave themselves behind as collectible toys, which means any Pokémon you beat, including the giant bosses waiting at the end of each area, might join your roster. With more than 600 Toy Pokémon to collect, the hook is the same one that has powered the series since Red and Blue: just one more, and then maybe that rare one over there.
Variety comes from the special battles. Battle Royales are timed free-for-alls against a swarm of opponents, Charge Battles line up your whole collection to bulldoze through enemy defenses, and Team Battles let you pick two allies from your roster to fight alongside you. A second player can join in local co-op, and StreetPass brings visitors in from other players' games.
Ambrella, the studio behind the Rumble series, built Rumble Blast to be played in short, satisfying bursts, and it is a fun way to see Pokémon from a completely different angle. Younger players can pick it up in seconds, and completionists have hundreds of toys standing between them and a full collection.
