Item Condition

Game only: the cartridge in a protective holder, no box or manual. As a Japanese release, the label and in-game text are in Japanese. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Groudon on the cover art, Japanese text throughout, and the game that started Generation III exactly as players in Japan first met it. Pocket Monsters Ruby launched in Japan in November 2002, months before the English release, and it marked the biggest leap the series had taken since the move to color: a brand-new region, a new generation of Pokemon and a battle system that changed how the games were played from then on.

Hoenn is a region shaped by land and sea. You start in Littleroot Town as the child of Gym Leader Norman, pick Treecko, Torchic or Mudkip, and set off across volcanoes, deserts, rainforests and huge stretches of ocean you surf and dive through. Ruby's villains are Team Magma, who want to expand the land by awakening the ancient Pokemon Groudon, the legendary on the cover. Along the way you can decorate a Secret Base, blend Berries into Pokeblocks and enter Pokemon Contests that judge style and beauty rather than strength.

The changes under the hood were just as significant. Ruby and Sapphire introduced abilities, natures and double battles, the foundation of competitive Pokemon ever since, and added 135 new species to discover. The jump to Game Boy Advance hardware brought brighter, more detailed sprites and a richer, more energetic soundtrack than the Game Boy Color games could manage.

A Japanese cartridge carries its own appeal for collectors and longtime fans: the original release, with the original Japanese script and title screen exactly as players there first saw them. For anyone who reads Japanese or knows Hoenn well enough to play by memory, it is a fresh way to experience a familiar journey, and a distinctive piece for a Pokemon or import collection.
