Item Description
Treecko, Torchic or Mudkip: the first decision in Pokémon Ruby has been argued over on playgrounds and message boards for more than twenty years. Ruby and its counterpart Sapphire launched the third generation of Pokémon on the Game Boy Advance, reaching Japan in 2002 and North America in 2003, and swapped the familiar Kanto and Johto for Hoenn, a lush, tropical region of open seas, volcanic peaks and island towns. Hoenn remains one of the series' most distinctive regions.
The world was a big leap forward on the GBA's screen. You climb the ash-covered slopes of Mt. Chimney, cross the rope bridges of the treetop town of Fortree City, surf long stretches of ocean and use Dive to explore routes beneath the waves on your way to Sootopolis City, built inside a crater. Your father, Norman, runs the Petalburg City Gym, which gives one of the badge battles a personal edge, and secret bases let you carve out a hideaway of your own along the routes.
Under the surface, Game Freak rebuilt the battle system in ways the series still uses. Ruby introduced Abilities and Natures, added double battles, and brought in Pokémon Contests and Berry blending as a whole second way to raise your team, alongside 135 new Pokémon. This is the version where Team Magma schemes to expand the land by awakening Groudon, the legendary on the box, and where Ruby-exclusive Pokémon such as Zangoose, Mawile, Solrock and Seedot can be caught. After the Elite Four, Rayquaza waits at the top of Sky Pillar and Latios roams the region.
The soundtrack is a big part of why Hoenn sticks with people; Route 110, Littleroot Town and the legendary battle theme come rushing back within a few notes. Ruby and Sapphire went on to become the best-selling games on the Game Boy Advance, and Ruby is Hoenn as it first appeared, before Emerald reworked the story and Omega Ruby rebuilt it in 3D. On original hardware, it is the purest way to relive the adventure that defined the GBA generation of Pokémon.
