Item Description

Forget Poké Balls. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, you befriend wild Pokémon by drawing loops around them with the stylus, circling fast and tight while they thrash and fight back, until the Capture Styler locks in and they agree to lend a hand. It is one of the most physical, satisfying uses of the DS touchscreen in the whole Pokémon catalog, and this sequel builds out everything the first Pokémon Ranger started.

The story begins at the Ranger School, where you enroll as Kellyn or Kate, make friends with Rhythmi and the rival Keith, and graduate into a post as an Area Ranger in Vientown. From there the stakes climb fast. The shadowy Team Dim Sun, led by Mr. Kincaid, is using Gigaremo devices powered by dark crystals to control Pokémon, and the Rangers are all that stand in the way. Befriended Pokémon use their field abilities to cut through obstacles, smash rocks and douse fires before heading back to the wild, so every mission becomes a running puzzle of which Pokémon to recruit next.

Shadows of Almia made big strides over the original. Instead of just Plusle or Minun, you can earn a choice of 17 partner Pokémon, one for each Generation IV type, starting with a pick of Pachirisu, Munchlax or Starly. Optional Ranger Quests reward you with Styler upgrades and new partners, and as your Styler grows more powerful the missions push deeper into Almia. Filling out the Browser with every Pokémon you befriend, and running down the region's legendary encounters, keeps completionists busy long after Team Dim Sun falls.

Developed by Creatures Inc. and published by Nintendo in 2008, it is the middle chapter of the Ranger trilogy, more generous and more accessible than the game that came before it. If you love Pokémon but want an adventure built around action and exploration instead of turn-based battles, Almia is a wonderful region to get lost in.

About the game

In the second in the Pokemon Ranger series, you once again play as a Pokemon Ranger, working to help people, Pokemon and nature in a new area called the Almia Region. Starting out as a Student Ranger, you quickly earn the title of a full-fledged Pokemon Ranger. As you succeed in more and more missions, you will aspire to become the highest Ranger rank: Top Ranger. Along the way you meet and capture all kinds of different Pokemon. Capture wild Pokemon and create a team to clear obstacles and puzzles encountered along the way. After using a Pokemon’s ability, it will leave your team; however, you will have a Partner Pokemon that will always stay by your side. As you progress through Missions and Quests, your Capture Styler becomes more powerful, giving your Styler more Energy and eventually advancing you to the level of Top Ranger.
