The humans are gone, the land has withered, and the only resident left seems to be a lone Tangrowth. Into that quiet world wakes a Ditto who has taken on the shape of its long-lost trainer, and Pokémon Pokopia hands you the job of bringing everything back to life. It is a cozy idea with a melancholy edge, and it turned into one of the most celebrated games in Pokémon history.

Professor Tangrowth sets the mission: restore habitats so Pokémon return. Early on, you nurse a dehydrated Squirtle back to health, and every Pokémon you befriend teaches Ditto a new move for reshaping the world, from growing bushes and watering dry plants to cutting debris and smashing rocks. Each species has its own idea of home: one wants tall grass planted beneath a tree, another wants a punching bag beside a bench, and Hoothoot prefers the dark. Getting the details right is the puzzle, and watching a new Pokémon wander into a space you built for it is the reward.

From there, it grows into a full crafting and building sandbox. Ditto gathers materials, builds houses with help from Pokémon neighbors, gardens, decorates, and meets 300 Pokémon from every generation along with quirky specialists such as Peakychu, Mosslax, Chef Dente and DJ Rotom. A day-and-night cycle tied to the real clock keeps the world ticking between sessions, and friends can visit your growing paradise.

Pokopia was co-developed by Game Freak and Koei Tecmo's Omega Force, a team with Dragon Quest Builders 2 experience, and released as a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive in March 2026. Critics compared it to a mix of Minecraft, Viva Piñata and Animal Crossing, and it became the highest-rated Pokémon game on Metacritic while selling 2.2 million copies in its first four days. Few spin-offs have reimagined what a Pokémon game can be this confidently.
