Item Condition

Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Pokémon Pinball has a party trick you feel before you see it. The cartridge was built around its own rumble motor, powered by a single AAA battery, so every bumper hit and flipper slap buzzes in your hands. GameSpot called it a nice novelty in 1999; in practice it is the detail everyone who played it still remembers.

The game itself is a clever fusion of pinball and the Pokémon hunt. Two tables, the Red Field and the Blue Field, each move through a rotation of Kanto locations that decide which Pokémon can appear. Every game opens with the starting locations flashing past slot-machine style, and one press of A picks your spot and launches the first ball. Trigger Catch Mode and the clock starts: six hits on the pop bumpers reveal a wild Pokémon piece by piece, then four direct hits with the ball capture it, all inside a two-minute window. Evolution Mode works the same way in reverse, letting you power up a Pokémon you caught in the current game, and it is the only way to log evolved forms in your Pokédex.

Between captures there is plenty of classic pinball craft. Upgrading the ball from a Poké Ball through Great and Ultra Balls to a Master Ball multiplies your score, a Pikachu can bat a draining ball back into play, and bonus stages built around Diglett, Gengar, Meowth, Seel and Mewtwo break up the main tables. Chasing a complete Pokédex gives every session a goal beyond the high score, and because each table and location offers a different mix of Pokémon, filling it in means mastering both fields rather than camping on a favorite.

Developed by Jupiter and published by Nintendo, Pokémon Pinball sold 262,000 copies in its first 20 days in Japan, the fastest-selling Game Boy title at that point, and finished 1999 as the fourth best-selling game in the United States, behind only Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow. It is the spin-off that proved the Pokédex could drive almost any kind of game, and a terrific pick-up-and-play cartridge in its own right.

About the game

There are two tables in the game, red and blue. Each table has its own details and gameplay elements. Each table has different "locations" that you play, which determine which Pokémon are available for capture. A subset of available locations are displayed slot-machine style in the beginning of a game, and pressing A will select your starting location and launch the first ball into play. After that, each table has its own mechanism for advancing to the next location, including the locations not available at the start of the game. "Catch Mode," when activated, starts a 2 minute window of opportunity where you can attempt to capture a Pokémon. Once you activate "catch mode," you must hit the pop bumpers 6 times. Each hit unlocks 1/6 of an image of the Pokémon currently up for capture. Once the image is complete, the Pokémon appears on the table, where it must be hit 4 times with the ball to capture it. "Evolution Mode," when activated, starts a 2 minute window of opportunity where you select a captured Pokémon (from the current game in progress only) and attempt to evolve it into another form. This is the only way to add the evolved form to your Pokédex.
