Item Description
Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness told a story many players still name as the best in Pokémon, and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky is that story in its fullest form. Chunsoft's 2009 Nintendo DS release keeps everything from the paired originals, from the Time Gears and Temporal Tower to the life of an apprentice at Wigglytuff's Guild, then fills in the corners with new places, new heroes and new chapters.
The premise is unchanged and still irresistible. A personality quiz decides which Pokémon you become, you wash up on a beach with no memory, and a nervous partner convinces you to join the guild in Treasure Town. Sky widens the choices: Phanpy, Vulpix, Riolu and Shinx join the list of possible heroes, Eevee returns from the Rescue Team games, and every hero option is also available as a partner, so the pairing you build can be entirely your own. Dungeons still rearrange themselves on every visit, and each step you take gives every enemy a turn, keeping the tension high on every floor.
Around town, Spinda's Café adds a Juice Bar that opens up extra dungeons, a Recycle Shop that trades in prize tickets, and its own stream of requests. A Kirlia runs the Secret Bazaar that sometimes appears in dungeons, the Sky Jukebox lets you replay the soundtrack, and after the main story you can reach Shaymin Village, the long Sky Peak climb and Destiny Tower. The biggest additions are five Special Episodes that hand the spotlight to supporting characters, from Bidoof's Wish and Igglybuff the Prodigy to In the Future of Darkness, which follows Grovyle through the bleak future the main story fights to prevent.
That extra material deepens a story already known for its emotional finale, and it is why Explorers of Sky is the version most Mystery Dungeon fans point newcomers to. It was popular enough that Nintendo brought it back on the Wii U Virtual Console in 2016, but the DS cartridge is where it began.
