Lumiose City is the entire stage this time, and Pokémon Legends: Z-A makes that tight focus its signature. Five years after the events of Pokémon X and Y, the Paris-inspired capital of Kalos is being redesigned by Quasartico Inc., whose redevelopment plan carves out Wild Zones so people and Pokémon can live side by side. You arrive as a tourist, befriend Taunie or Urbain, check in at Hotel Z under the watch of the 3,000-year-old AZ and his Floette, and choose Chikorita, Tepig or Totodile as your partner.

The biggest change is how battles work. Commands happen in real time, so positioning, timing and dodging matter as much as type matchups, and Pokémon move around the field instead of trading turns. Mega Evolution, introduced in X and Y and missing from new games for years, returns through Mega Energy collected during fights, and a wave of new Mega forms join the classics. Wild Pokémon sometimes Mega Evolve on their own and go berserk, turning the city into the arena for real-time Rogue Mega Evolution boss battles.

When night falls, Lumiose hosts the Z-A Royale, a tournament fought in shifting Battle Zones where you hunt other trainers, launch surprise attacks and climb from Rank Z toward Rank A for a wish granted by Quasartico. It gives the game a nightly rhythm, catching and exploring by day and ranked showdowns after dark, while the Battle Club offers multiplayer link battles for up to four players.

Building on the open style of Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Z-A sold more than 5.8 million copies in its first week. Reviewers favored the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, praising its smoother performance, and critics singled out the real-time combat as its biggest win. For fans of Kalos or anyone who missed Mega Evolution, it is a bold reinvention of how Pokémon fights.
