Pokémon HeartGold Version is one of the best-loved entries in the Pokémon series, Game Freak's reimagining of the Gold version that captivated a generation on the Game Boy Color. Released for the Nintendo DS in Japan in 2009, timed to Gold and Silver's tenth anniversary, and in North America in March 2010, it brought the Johto region back to life with updated visuals, features drawn from Pokémon Crystal and the walking Pokémon mechanic, which lets the lead Pokémon in your party follow you every step of the journey and even pick up items along the way.

From scaling the Bell Tower to challenging the Elite Four, and from there crossing into Kanto to take on its eight Gym Leaders after becoming Champion, HeartGold offers an adventure that feels both warmly nostalgic and genuinely substantial. The adventure builds to a battle with Red atop Mt. Silver, and the Battle Frontier waits beyond that. New additions include the Pokéathlon, a set of touchscreen competitions such as hurdling, and an expanded Safari Zone whose areas you can customize to change which species appear.

HeartGold is an excellent game on its own merits. Critics at the time called HeartGold and SoulSilver the best Pokémon games yet, they won the 2010 Golden Joystick Award for Portable Game of the Year, and together they sold more than 12 million units, placing them among the best-selling DS games. The Johto soundtrack, reimagined for the DS, hits differently when you hear it again after years away. This is a Not For Resale edition of the game.

About the game

Pokémon HeartGold Version and Pokémon SoulSilver Version are paired Generation IV remakes of the Generation II games Pokémon Gold and Silver. Much like how Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen revisited the Generation I story of Kanto, HeartGold and SoulSilver retell the story of Johto, with the player's starting town being New Bark Town. While the games feature several expansions in key areas, the overall plot follows the same direction as the original Gold and Silver. Some aspects exclusive to Crystal are also included. Like how FireRed and LeafGreen could link up with Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald to complete the Pokédex by trading regionally exclusive Pokémon, HeartGold and SoulSilver can link up with Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum to obtain Pokémon unavailable in Johto and Kanto (such as the Sinnoh starters) and vice versa. Kris, despite being the female counterpart of Crystal's player character, is not included as the female player character, with a new character instead taking her place. Whether she is chosen to be the player character or not, this new character will still appear in the game.
