Item Condition

Game only: the cartridge in a protective holder, no box or manual. For the specifics, look to the photos — they're of this exact cartridge. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Few games have ever been so direct about what a touchscreen is for. In Pokémon Dash, Pikachu runs wherever you drag the stylus, and the faster you stroke the screen, the faster he goes. It launched alongside the Nintendo DS in Japan in December 2004 as the first Pokémon game on the system, a pure, playful demonstration of what the new hardware could do.

Developed by Ambrella and published by Nintendo, it is a race against rival Pokémon across courses dotted with checkpoints. Five cups of five courses each make up the Grand Prix, and clearing them opens harder tiers against faster rivals. Off the beaten track, water sections let Pikachu hitch a ride on Lapras, and sky races send him drifting between checkpoints in a hot-air balloon, so every course asks you to read the terrain as well as sprint.

The feature collectors find most fascinating is the Cartridge Grand Prix. Slot a Game Boy Advance copy of Ruby, Sapphire, FireRed, LeafGreen or Emerald into the DS's second slot, and the game opens up special courses shaped like the Pokémon on your team. It is a perfect example of the dual-slot experiments of the early DS years, a trick later hardware dropped entirely. Up to six players could also race together, each with their own copy.

Critics found it thin, mostly because Pikachu is the only runner and the main circuit is short, but that is part of its charm now. Pokémon Dash is a snapshot of the DS finding its feet and a quirky early experiment from the Pokémon world that slots neatly beside the mainline games on a collector's shelf.

About the game

In Pokémon Dash, you'll control Pikachu and race against other Pokémon. Use the DS's touch screen to adjust Pikachu's direction and speed. Off the course, Pikachu can cross water terrain by riding on Lapras' back and fly using a hot-air balloon.
