Item Description

Pokémon Crystal is the enhanced third version of the second generation, and for many fans it remains the high-water mark of the classic handheld era. Developed by Game Freak and released for the Game Boy Color in Japan in December 2000 and in North America in July 2001, Crystal revisits the Johto region of Gold and Silver with a series of meaningful refinements. Pokémon now animate when they appear in battle, a first for the main series that gives every creature a flicker of life and personality. It was also the first main-series game to let players choose to play as a girl, with the new trainer Kris joining the boy hero, a small change that meant a great deal to a generation of players who finally saw themselves in the adventure.

The story follows your trainer through the richly layered Johto region, challenging eight Gym Leaders, unraveling the mystery of the legendary beasts and ultimately taking on the Elite Four and the Champion. Suicune is given a much bigger role this time: the new character Eusine gives the story a direct path toward it, and its thread is woven through the adventure so that finally encountering it feels like a real event. The new Battle Tower adds a run of seven trainers to test a team of three against. Then comes Crystal's real magic: once Johto is conquered, the Kanto region from the original Red and Blue opens up, effectively doubling the journey and making it one of the biggest adventures ever released on a handheld.

Visually, Crystal pushed the Game Boy Color about as far as it could go, with a vibrant palette, smooth animation and detailed sprite work that still looks wonderful on original hardware. The soundtrack by Junichi Masuda, Go Ichinose and Morikazu Aoki is packed with memorable themes, all the way up to the triumphant fanfare of a hard-won gym badge. For many players it is the definitive second-generation Pokémon game, and the best way to revisit one of the best-loved chapters in one of the most successful franchises ever created.

About the game

Pokemon Crystal is an enhanced version of Pokemon Gold and Silver and a role-playing game played from a top-down perspective. As in the earlier versions, the player explores the Johto region, catches and trains Pokemon, and battles other Trainers in turn-based combat while earning Gym Badges and filling out the Pokedex. Crystal keeps the same core adventure while adding refinements, including the option to play as a female character and animated Pokemon sprites. It retains series staples such as a real-time clock, Pokemon breeding, and trading and battling with other games via a link connection.
