The first thing Pokémon Colosseum shows you is its hero blowing up a building. Wes, a former member of the criminal gang Team Snagem, destroys their hideout, steals their portable Snag Machine and rides off across the desert on a hoverbike with his Espeon and Umbreon. No professor, no starter pick, no bedroom in a quiet hometown. From its first minutes, this GameCube RPG from Genius Sonority makes it clear it is a very different kind of Pokémon game.
The Orre region is a sunbaked land of dusty frontier towns and rough neighborhoods like Pyrite Town and the underground city known as The Under, and there are no wild Pokémon waiting in the tall grass. Instead, a shadowy organization called Cipher has been artificially closing the hearts of Pokémon, turning them into fighting machines called Shadow Pokémon. Wes can snag them right out of enemy trainers' hands, but only Rui, a young woman he rescues early on, can see the dark aura that marks them. That twist turns every trainer battle into a hunt: spot the Shadow Pokémon, weaken it without knocking it out, and snag it before the fight ends.
Every battle is a two-on-two double battle, which makes Colosseum more tactical than the handheld games of its day and rewards teams built to work in pairs. Snagged Shadow Pokémon arrive cold and unpredictable, sometimes flying into Hyper Mode and ignoring your commands, and opening their hearts through battles and time in your party is the long, satisfying arc that runs alongside the story. Fully purified at the Relic Stone in Agate Village, they can finally level up and learn their true moves. Along the way Wes can snag Shadow versions of the legendary beasts Raikou, Entei and Suicune, and the 100-trainer gauntlet of Mt. Battle waits for players who want a real test.
Colosseum was also built to connect. Its Battle Mode can bring teams over from Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire using the GameCube Game Boy Advance cable, and purified Pokémon can be traded back to the handheld games, which made it an important source for Pokémon that were otherwise hard to find in that generation. Its darker story and mature tone set the template for its 2005 follow-up, Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness. If your idea of Pokémon is wandering through grass with a starter at your side, this is the one that opens with an explosion, a stolen machine and a getaway across the sand.
Pokemon fans can now battle their favorite Pokemon on the grand stage. Starring a brand new leading character, Pokemon, Colosseum offers a story mode that pits you against tough trainers who routinely catch damaged Pokemon. In Battle mode, you can use the Game Boy Advance cable to send your team from your Pokemon Ruby or Pokemon Sapphire Game Pak to your Gamecube, then witness the true potential of your team. Rescue Pokemon and watch them come to life in spectacular Colosseum battles.
