Item Description
Kratos versus PaRappa the Rapper. Sly Cooper against a Big Daddy. Nathan Drake and Sweet Tooth brawling alongside Sackboy and Toro. PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, SuperBot Entertainment's 2012 crossover fighter for Sony, finally answered the question PlayStation fans had argued about for years: what happens when the platform's mascots and anti-heroes share one stage?
Its big idea is the Super system. Instead of knocking rivals off the screen, you build up a meter by landing attacks and cash it in for level one, two or three Supers, character-specific finishers that are the only way to score a kill. Every match becomes a game of meter management and timing: unleash a level three into an empty corner and your best shot is gone. The launch roster of around twenty fighters spans Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, Cole MacGrath, Spike from Ape Escape, Sir Daniel Fortesque and Fat Princess, plus guests like Dante, Raiden from Metal Gear Rising and Tekken's Heihachi.
The stages are where the fan service runs wildest. Each one starts in a single franchise and gets crashed by another mid-match, from Kratos's underworld of Hades, where a marching army of Patapons storms the scene, to Jak and Daxter's Sandover Village interrupted by a round of Hot Shots Golf. Moving platforms and hazards keep longer sessions unpredictable, and the arcade ladder gives every character a story with a rival to defeat.
The Vita version, ported by Bluepoint Games, mirrors the PS3 release's roster and stages and even edged out the console game on Metacritic. Sony also designed the two to work together, launching it as one of the first cross-buy titles with cross-play between PS3 and Vita. SuperBot's brawler only ever got one outing, which makes it a fascinating snapshot of Sony's first-party lineup at the height of the PS3 and Vita years.
