The character select screen alone is a tour of PlayStation history. Kratos, Sackboy, Nathan Drake, Sly Cooper, Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter, Sweet Tooth, PaRappa, Sir Daniel Fortesque, Spike from Ape Escape, Fat Princess and Toro all share one roster, joined by guests like Dante, Raiden, Big Daddy and Heihachi Mishima. PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, developed by SuperBot Entertainment with Sony Santa Monica and released in 2012, was Sony's big swing at the four-player platform fighter, and seeing those characters trade blows is a rush for anyone who grew up with a DualShock in hand.

What sets it apart from other platform fighters is how you score. There are no health bars and no ring-outs. Instead, every hit builds AP toward a three-level super meter, and supers are the only way to take someone out. A level one super is a quick, close-range finisher, while a level three super takes over the screen and can wipe out every opponent at once. That makes every match a running calculation: spend your meter now for a sure kill, or hold out for something bigger and risk someone else getting there first.

The stages are the real love letter. Each one starts in one franchise and gets invaded by another mid-match. Hades opens on God of War's underworld before a Patapon army marches in, Dreamscape mixes LittleBigPlanet's craft-paper world with the quizmaster from Buzz!, and Alden's Tower crosses inFamous with Sly Cooper. Arcade mode gives each fighter a rival and a short story, ending with a showdown against Polygon Man, a forgotten early PlayStation mascot resurrected as the final boss.

It turned out to be a one-and-done: no sequel followed, which leaves this as the only game where Sony's first-party heroes of that era meet in the same ring. On a PS3 it is a lively local multiplayer game for up to four players, and a playable museum of the franchises that defined the console.
