Item Description

The first time a Sunflower heals a pinned-down Peashooter while a Chomper burrows under a zombie Engineer, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare makes complete sense. PopCap took its top-down tower-defense hit and turned it into a team-based third-person shooter in 2014, keeping the cartoon humor and the lawn-war rivalry while handing you a weapon, a class and a garden to defend.

The Plants field four classes: the Peashooter with its explosive Chili Bean Bomb and rooted Pea Gatling stance, the healing Sunflower, the Chomper that tunnels underground to swallow zombies whole, and the long-range Cactus with its Potato Mines and Garlic Drone. The Zombies answer with the rocket-jumping Foot Soldier, the jackhammer-riding Engineer, the teleporting, healing Scientist and the hulking, tackle-happy All-Star. Each class plays differently, and figuring out how they counter one another is half the fun.

Garden Ops is the standout: up to four players plant and defend a garden against escalating waves of zombies and boss attacks, then race for the escape zone, and it supports split-screen co-op on the couch. Gardens & Graveyards sends the zombies attacking plant-held bases one objective at a time, and Team Vanquish is straight team elimination. Coins earned in play buy sticker packs that unlock character variants, such as fire- and ice-flavored Peashooters, along with potted-plant allies to drop around the map.

Garden Warfare was built around online team play, so its biggest modes are very much a product of their era, but the local co-op and that irresistible character design make it a fun slice of PopCap history. The Platinum Hits label, Microsoft's banner for strong-selling 360 games, shows how many players took to the idea, and the game launched a spin-off line that continued with Garden Warfare 2 and Battle for Neighborville.
