Few sounds in an arcade match a real pinball machine: the knocker firing for a free game, the bell chimes of an old electromechanical, the clack of a flipper catching the ball cleanly. FarSight Studios built Pinball Hall of Fame: The Gottlieb Collection around reproducing exactly that, recreating real tables from Gottlieb, one of the oldest names in the business, with physics that treat the ball as a heavy steel object rather than a cartoon.
The lineup spans the history of the machine. Ace High (1957) and Central Park (1966), with its mechanical monkey ringing a bell, capture the electromechanical era; Big Shot brings a billiards theme; Genie (1979) is a sprawling wide-body; Black Hole (1981) hides a second, lower playfield beneath the main one; Victory (1987) takes the action to the racetrack; and Tee'd Off (1993) carries the bright, toy-filled style of the '90s. Play-Boy, from 1932, goes back to before flippers existed, and the arcade novelties Xolten the fortune teller and the Love Meter round out the room.
Because the tables play so differently, the collection doubles as a short course in pinball history. The slower, chime-driven rhythm of the 1950s and '60s machines gives way to ramps, layered playfields and busier rule sets as you move through the decades, and learning each table's personality is the long-term hook. Split-screen and multiplayer support keep it social, and the authentic sound effects carry the illusion through long sessions.
This PlayStation 2 release launched FarSight's Hall of Fame series; the studio followed it with The Williams Collection and eventually The Pinball Arcade, and an expanded edition with extra tables later reached Wii and PSP. If you would rather not dedicate a garage to a Black Hole cabinet, this is a lot of real Gottlieb history on one disc.
Pinball Hall of Fame: The Gottlieb Collection is a pinball video game developed by FarSight Studios and published by Crave Entertainment. The tables in the game are recreations of real tables. The game was later released as Gottlieb Pinball Classics, published by System 3, in Europe and Australia. This expanded version featured additional tables and was released in North America on Wii and PSP under the original name, Pinball Hall of Fame: The Gottlieb Collection.
