Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

On the day Super Mario 64 showed players what 3D platforming could be, Pilotwings 64 showed them what it felt like simply to fly. Launched alongside Mario with the Nintendo 64 in 1996 and developed by Paradigm Simulation with Nintendo, it takes the license-test structure of the Super NES original and opens it up into wide, sunlit islands you can drift across at your own pace. There are no enemies to defeat and no princess to rescue, just a series of flight tests judged on precision, smooth handling and how gracefully you touch down.

Six pilots, from Lark and Kiwi to Hawk and Goose, take on three main vehicles that each demand a different touch. The hang glider rides thermals and rewards patient, sweeping turns, the Rocket Belt asks for delicate thrust control as you hover through rings and settle onto landing pads, and the gyrocopter adds a dash of action with missiles for knocking down targets. Work through the Beginner, Class A, Class B and Pilot licenses with strong scores and the bonus events open up: the Cannonball, Sky Diving formations and the bouncing Jumble Hopper boots.

The real star is the world itself. Holiday Island, Crescent Island, Ever-Frost Island and Little States, a miniature United States dotted with landmarks, are built to be explored, and Birdman mode lets you take wing with no score at all, gliding wherever curiosity leads. Little States also hides one of the console's most famous jokes: Mario's face carved into Mount Rushmore, which turns into Wario's if you take the gyrocopter's missiles to it.

As a launch game, Pilotwings 64 was a showcase for the N64's analog stick, the kind of fine, floating control a digital pad could never manage, and it set the calm, exploratory tone the series carried forward to Pilotwings Resort on the 3DS fifteen years later. Today it is a wonderful change of pace in a library full of shooters and kart racers: a game about the pleasure of a clean landing and the view on the way down.
