Item Condition
This is a foil single card — Pikachu (Movie Promo), WoTC Promo number 04/53 — in the condition noted in the listing. WoTC Promo cards from this era carry a special kind of charm as early English-language promotional releases from the Wizards of the Coast era of the Pokémon TCG. This card's condition is as described in the listing.
Item Description
In November 1999, moviegoers walking into Pokémon: The First Movie came out with a Wizards of the Coast Black Star Promo in hand, one of four possible cards handed out with a ticket, and Pikachu was the mascot of the bunch. Black Star Promo #4 carries Ken Sugimori’s artwork, and the English theater release is marked with a gold-foil stamp reading “Kids’ WB Presents Pokémon The First Movie,” a small badge that ties the card to one of the biggest moments of the original Pokémon craze.
On the table it plays like a classic early Pikachu. Recharge, for a single Lightning Energy, searches your deck for a Lightning Energy card and attaches it to Pikachu, setting up Thunderbolt, which hits for 50 with three Lightning Energy at the cost of discarding every Energy attached. Power up, strike hard, start over: that rhythm is pure Wizards-era design, and the 50-HP Basic wears it well.
This is the Wizards of the Coast Black Star Promo, number 4, the First Movie theater Pikachu illustrated by Ken Sugimori. It belongs in a WotC promo binder, a Pikachu master set, or alongside Pokémon movie memorabilia from the era that started it all.
